Volunteers Needed!

Here at Saskatoon Services for Seniors we strive to make a difference every day. We do this though helping Seniors remain in safely in their own homes by helping provide services that they need. One of these key services especially in winter is our Grocery Delivery and snow shoveling programs, we are currently looking for one or two volunteers to help with these programs. If you are interested in helping seniors in our community please contact our office today. Our grocery shoppers/delivery volunteers are needed for one to two days per week.

Housekeeping Services

Saskatoon Services for Seniors offers housekeeping services for all seniors in Saskatoon. Our staff is screened and fully insured. We are here to assist with many household cleaning services such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, dusting and wall washing. We only provide the services that you require and as such only have a one hour minimum for each appointment. We can provide regular weekly service, bi-weekly services or just when you need us. The fee involved is based on the senior’s income and if cost is a barrier, though our donors we can usually overcome this barrier to be able to get seniors the help they need.

Product Review: Polyride Fe® Ultra

Prevent & Treat Iron Deficiency – For All Diets. 1.85 million Canadians suffer from iron deficiency.* There are many reasons for iron deficiency, such as a diet low in iron. It contains the highest amount of elemental iron, additional vitamin C to enhance iron absorption, and vitamin B12 for deficiency. Taking one capsule a day that is also easy on the stomach, may lead to better compliance. It is also VegeCert and Kosher Certified. Preparing to Sell Your Home

Thinking of selling your home to downsize or move to a senior-supportive environment? Not sure where to start? Decluttering and preparing your home for sale can feel overwhelming, though its often less complicated than we think. To get your home ready for sale: 1) Sort items into piles to help you determine what to keep/sell/donate/toss. 2) Make any minor repairs and consider repainting with neutral colours, if necessary. 3) Give the home a good, thorough cleaning. 4) Remove most of your personal items, like photos and art objects. 5) Remove anything you plan to keep, such as window coverings.

Fear of Falls Causes Unsafe Behavior

When someone is fearful of falling, they start to avoid everyday activities by staying at home and doing less. This lack of activity leads to loss of strength, reduced muscle tone, and loss of coordination and balance. This physical deterioration increases the risk of falling and if a fall does occur, it further heightens the fear. Turn your fear of falling into positive actions; remain active, exercise regularly, use assistive devices such as walkers or grab bars and wear sensible shoes. Consider joining a group session designed especially to teach balance exercises for fall prevention.

Balance Your Eating Habits

I like to advocate for the 80/20 rule – eating healthy 80% of the time and adding in those delicious treats only 20%. Focus on trying to increase the healthy foods initially rather than focusing on what you shouldn’t be eating and that feeling of deprivation. Most people need to increase their vegetable and fruit intake so focusing on that and getting the colour of the rainbow each day. This will increase nutrients in diet, improve satiety, and decrease intake of unhealthy foods. Try adding more veggies into sauces, more salads, veggie frittata, berries in oatmeal, etc.
