Maintaining Brain Health

When it comes to brain health, it’s always better to try to prevent any future problems rather than deal with them once it’s too late. Some ways you can help to prevent cognitive decline include: 1) Keep your fuel stable – Avoid sugary, high carb foods to minimize glucose spikes, which tax your system greatly. 2) Exercise regularly – Some exercise is better than none, especially as we age. 3) Get enough sleep – Most of the cleaning and repairing functions in the brain occur during sleep. There can be severe consequences when we try to skimp on that essential self-care step!

Natural Ways to Control Hypertension

If you have hypertension (aka high blood pressure), there are some lifestyle changes you can make that may help to lower your blood pressure over time. Exercising regularly can not only help to lower your blood pressure, but may also lead to a healthier body weight, which can lower blood pressure even more. Eating a healthy diet that is low in saturated fat, cholesterol, salt, caffeine and alcohol is also important, as is getting enough quality sleep each night. To help control your stress levels, look for activities that make you feel calm, like listening to music or practicing yoga.

Easy Warm-Up Exercises

With the beautiful weather of summer comes an increase in many people’s activity levels. We are more motivated to get out and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. With the increase in physical activity comes an increase in activity-related injuries and muscle strains. To reduce injury occurrence, a very simple thing we all can do is some easy warm-up exercises. Lunges, bending forward, arm circles, side bending, and jumping jacks are some great exercises that can warm up and stretch a lot of muscles before we get going. Post-exercise stretching will also reduce your risk of injury. Enjoy the sunshine!
