FEBRUARY 27

The Health, Wellness and Sustainability Festival is an interactive, all ages educational experience that aims to build community learning in holistic wellness. Coming on February 27  to the Victoria Conference Center, this festival goes beyond the average trade show, featuring Jo Robinson, author of Eating on the Wild Side, TED-trained speakers presenting throughout the day, a curated list of health and wellness professionals offering products and insights on bodywork, fitness, diet and nutrition, herbal medicines, gluten-free living, and much more. This is the festival’s third year of community-driven programming, and it is still growing. Over 65 booths participated last year and we debuted our interactive Food Science Fair, a hands-on learning opportunity for all ages that is returning this year as part of the Experience Bar. Come experience our open-forum learning opportunity with your family and friends on February 27, 2016 at the Victoria Conference Center.

Organic Horticulture

Contamination of our environment is rising at an alarming rate due to increasing emissions and chemical run offs. The rapid destruction of ecosystems and natural habitats for plants and animals has literally pushed our environment to the brink of destruction. Each year several plant and animal species become extinct due to habitat destruction as a result of the reckless use of chemicals in traditional landscaping practices. The use of organic products in lawn care significantly helps in combating ground and water pollution and favors micro environments that invite birds, animals and insects to a safer habitat. We urge you to join our efforts in restoring the environment by playing your part. Clean Air Yard Care is proud to only use those products that are safe for our homes and our environment. All of our fertilizer products are 100% organic and comprised of a unique, proprietary blend formulated exclusively for Clean Air Yard Care.

Meet Your Matcha

They say it takes about two weeks to start forming a habit and two more for it to really stick. Why not try a resolution booster? Matcha is a powdered green tea loaded with compounds that can help you on your quest to keep your goals. Just one cup contains ten times the nutritional value of a cup of regular green tea. The drink contains vitamin A and C, selenium, chromium, zinc, potassium and magnesium, and has been shown to help fight cancer, reduce the risk of disease and battle infection. It’s packed with L-Theanine, an amino acid that acts as a mood enhancer, reducing stress and relaxing the mind. Unlike coffee, Matcha releases caffeine to the bloodstream over an extended period of time – giving you alertness without the jitters. A recent study found that Matcha increases energy expenditure and helps your body burn fat without producing negative side effects or significantly altering your heart rate.

Investigating HPV Vaccinations

Danish researchers are investigating more than 1300 girls and young women with chronic symptoms after HPV vaccination. The researchers describe a “collection of symptoms consistent with pronounced autonomic dysfunction coupled with severe headaches, excessive fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, gastrointestinal discomfort, and widespread pain of a neuropathic character” developing within two months after HPV vaccination. Similar reports have been made in the US, New Zealand, France and Japan. Denmark is conducting its own independent investigation after requesting a review of the issue by the European Medicines Agency. However Denmark was dissatisfied with the findings and concerned about conflicts of interests. It is funding its own research to be conducted by specialists who are seeing girls with symptoms after HPV vaccination and who are independent of the pharmaceutical industry. If you suspect that your child may have been negatively affected by a vaccination please contact my office for help.

Good Financial Health

When is the last time you considered your own financial health? There are many dimensions to financial health, including the amount of savings you have, how much you’re setting away for retirement, and how much of your income you are spending on fixed or non-discretionary expenses. Each person’s situation is different, for this reason, it is worthwhile spending some time in developing your own financial plan to ensure that you’re on track to reach both your short-term and long-term goals. People often fail to recognize the power of interest; For example, putting away $10.22 per month from the time you are 16 years old, with compounding interest, would result in $100,000 upon retirement. However, purchasing everyday items on credit and just paying the minimum balance each month may mean that you reach retirement carrying $100,000 in debt. Shedding unnecessary debt now with our help can steer you toward future financial health.

Worldview & Impact on my Osteopathic Practice

This writing is off the top of my head, in the short hour before needing to submit this as an article for the next edition of Wellnessnews in Victoria, BC. I share that only because it also speaks to what I wish to share here, which, amongst other things, includes something of how my mind works.

On the latter point, I ruminate on things for days, sometimes more, aware that something is taking shape behind the scenes. I don’t really know exactly what the result will be, nor what it will look like, but I can feel its weight, its shadow, its posture, sometimes even its range of motion. Then the writing down happens in a quick flow, with very little editing or shaping at all.

So, what is surfacing this time is about the bouncing I do, between worrying about the destructive trends going on all around us, and the excitement I feel regarding very encouraging things I can feel unfolding – in myself, and in many other people and phenomena around me.

I was at the library a short while ago, where I picked up a copy of a book called, “Who Rules the Earth?”, by Paul Steinberg. You can watch a 10-minute video, summarizing that book’s message, also called Who Rules the Earth? by the same author, here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/UXPkRIeW45c

More on the whole project of purposefully Changing Rules can be found by clicking on the link.

All of these resources that Paul Steinberg points to demonstrate both the evidence of how far humankind has strayed from ways of being that enhance Life Itself, AND, also what is required in order to truly have an impact on how things could be done in much more respectful and gentler ways, in the wider sphere. As Steinberg says, “Recycling Is Not Enough”.

What does this have to do with my practice as an osteopath? Well, the work I do with my clients/patients encompasses two fundamental things:

  1. finding subtle means to reflect back to people’s unconscious minds the sensory information necessary to re-engage their self-healing capability, and;
  2. educating those people regarding what needs to be understood, bio-mechanically, bio-energetically, and sometimes on even more subtle levels, what they can do to discern and listen to their body signals, and to make decisions more in harmony with those signals.

In other words, it is seeing what the “rules” for healthier living are (whether they are universal, and/or specific rules dictated by unique, individual circumstances), and beginning to align decisions and actions with those rules.

Migraines – it’s NOT all in your head

Sometimes we know when a migraine is coming, and sometimes we don’t. Often there are specific triggers that start a migraine that may include physical movement or even weather changes. When it starts at the base of the skull, then the cause of the migraine is likely structural. The human body is built to be structurally balanced with the head centered over the shoulders, which in turn is centered over the pelvis, which ideally, is level with the ground. When the head and the neck shift out of proper alignment, this may result in decreased blood flow into the head, and decreased flow out. In fact, it’s the latter that often describes what people feel with migraines – a feeling of built up pressure inside their head. Structural Chiropractors are able to correct and unlock these unwanted shifts in the head and neck, allowing the body to return to its normal, balanced state.

Eliminating Fears and Phobias With Ease

Have you ever gotten frustrated by your own or someone else’s fears or phobias and suggested “just get over it?”  Most people think fears can be overcome using “mind over matter,” but because the fear response is controlled by the unconscious mind, mental intention rarely works. Meanwhile, most people who suffer with these issues get so used to adapting to them, they don’t realize how they hold themselves back from really living, or how simply fears can be overcome. Twenty two years ago, I learned the powerful self-care method of Emotional Freedom Technique (aka EFT or Tapping). Since then I have taught EFT to hundreds of people in groups and in my private practice. I regularly receive gratitude for how their lives have changed using EFT to eliminate various fears and phobias including: spiders, snakes, heights, flying, public speaking, exams and riding in elevators. You can too!

Changing Habits: Part 2

Research shows that there are 6 stages in changing habits that are all important to your success. Here are questions to ask yourself at each stage: 1. PRE-CONTEMPLATION – How much pain am I experiencing due to this habit? 2. CONTEMPLATION – How aware am I of the problem(s) created by this habit? 3. PREPARATION – What are the options available to change this habit? What is my plan? When will I start? 4. ACTION – Am I following through on my plan?  Do I have the support I need? 5. MAINTENANCE – (note:  this is the consolidation stage & can last 6 months to a lifetime). How consistent am I with my new habit? 6. TERMINATION – Am I beyond the risks of returning to my old ways? Remember – Be kind to yourself as you change habits.  Practice makes permanent!

A Fresh Start 2016

Calvin Wells wrote “The pattern of disease or injury that affects any group of people is not a matter of chance.  It is invariably the expression of stresses and strain to which they were exposed, a response to everything in their environment and behavior.”  This is a provocative and profound statement. Without judgement of ourselves and others we are able to clear a path to new possibilities.  When the chips are down, I love these self help tips from Michael I. Bennett, MD. 1. “Do your best to survive.” 2. “Act as if you like yourself.” (self focussed not self absorbed) 3. “Keep busy and distracted.” 4. “Avoid adding to your troubles.” 5. “Grade yourself daily as if you were evaluating a friend.  Grant your-self kudos every time you treat yourself or do something positive during times when you feel like a loser who deserves nothing.” Get a Massage!

Sleeping, Snoring, Always Tired?

Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and benefits your heart, weight, mind, and more. The cost of poor sleep is much greater than many people think; it can have profound consequences for our long-term health. People who consistently fail to get enough sleep are at an increased risk of chronic disease. One potential cause of inadequate sleep is Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Multiple arousals each night are a result of the closing of their airway when asleep. This causes decreased oxygen levels and increased blood pressure. Over time, this leads to the chronic elevation of blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke. Fortunately, when sleep apnea is treated, sleep quality improves, blood pressure may decrease and so do the associated risks. Testing for sleep apnea is done in the comfort of your own home.
