Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is commonly seen in sports such as soccer, rugby, and skiing. Although many individuals initially recover well, the ongoing instability often prevents return to sports and leads to further knee injury, and the risk of developing future osteoarthritis becomes increased. Bracing is rarely sufficient. Surgical reconstruction performed early, within 3-6 weeks, helps to minimize the risk of further injury. ACL surgery should be treated as an urgent matter: assessment, diagnosis, and surgery can usually be completed within a few weeks. The athlete, elite, or weekend-warrior can then start early rehabilitation to maximize the benefits of the knee reconstruction.
Know Your Core Muscles
Physiotherapists offer training for the deep muscles of your core. These muscles include: 1) Transversus abdominis – the deepest abdominal that wraps around the abdomen between the lower ribs and top of the pelvis. It stabilizes the low back and pelvis and protects the inner organs. 2) Multifidus – a deep muscle located along the back of the spine very close to the midline that works with other muscles to stabilize the low back and pelvis. 3) The pelvic floor – a hammock of muscles that connect the pubic bone at the front to the tailbone and “sitz” bones at the back. There are no recipes for training the deep muscles – speak to your physiotherapist about the right training for your core.

Knee Replacements Outside of Hospitals
Total knee replacement is the most definitive treatment for advanced osteoarthritis. This procedure is typically done in a hospital setting, with 3-5 days of hospital stay. In recent years, it has become clear that healthy individuals can be discharged from the hospital on the day of their surgery, to safely and conveniently recover at home. Having surgery done at a medical centre provides a welcome alternative to hospitals. This can help reduce complications associated with hospitalization, and for many patients, the convenience and comfort of being at home with family is much preferred over the rustle and bustle of a busy surgical ward.
What are Symptoms?
Symptoms are a sign that something is damaged or dysfunctional. When it comes to neck and lower back problems, the root cause of symptoms is often the result of joint misalignment. Spinal misalignment is caused by either trauma or our very sedentary lives (sitting, driving, and using technology). Generally, trauma will cause immediate symptoms – pain, numbness, tingling, stiffness, or tightness. But if you have no symptoms, are you healthy? Sedentary causes of misalignment (like sitting) can take months or years for symptoms to develop. The damage slowly accumulates and eventually causes symptoms, which can lead to more chronic health concerns. Don’t allow your symptoms (or lack thereof) catch you off guard. Finding Courage, Seeing Success
Students working towards success need to find their courage. By showing up every day to challenge themselves and work on what has been difficult for them in the past, they can grow their brain’s capacity to learn. Courage requires the student to open up and let go of the limits they think they have and the expectations they believe they must meet. Realizing that making mistakes is a part of growth and admitting that things are challenging at times can be scary. But when a student steps out of their comfort zone, they have the potential to do amazing things.
Suffering from Seasonal Allergies?
Spring and summer are typical times for allergies to trees, grasses, pollens, and dust to manifest increased symptoms. Simply rinsing nasal passages and eyes with a normal saline solution several times a day is a quick way to reduce symptoms before they become worse. Use of allergy medications (sprays and tablets) can help reduce symptoms further. There are many people who suffer from allergy-like symptoms who do not have the typical immunoglobulin response on testing. These sensitivities and intolerances still need to be identified and treated in order to obtain long-term symptom relief and allow the immune and detoxification systems to work properly.
