Alternative Healing

The body achieves what the mind believes. Unfortunately, this popular expression is very true. In today’s society, ideas such as the Law of Attraction suggest that focusing on something that you want will bring the desired effect. Unconsciously, what we think, we create. An old proverb states: “Be aware of your thoughts, they become words. Be aware of your words, they become actions. Be aware of your actions, they become habits. Be aware of your habits, they become your destiny. Be the creator of your own destiny.” -Lao Tzu. At one point my journey through life, I believed that I was unworthy. This ultimately got me to change my ‘stinking thinking’. Along the way, I managed to turn things around to become a therapist who empowers clients to integrate body, mind and spirit. I am grateful to my teachers who showed me just how special I truly am!

Happiness….An Inside Job

Clients often come to me in the pursuit of happiness. They want more fulfillment and purpose in their lives and are looking to fill a void in their souls. When the focus is on the external goals of making money, creating an image or developing status – yes this can make us happy for a while – but it gives only fleeting pleasure and then we are in search of the next best thing. When we focus our desires on personal growth, developing close supportive family and friends and putting our energy into making life a better place to be… happiness can be sustained. Our happiness lives within the self. No two people have the same formula to create it. Placing our attention back to play, community, creating new experiences, appreciating what we have and having close people to share it with are good places to start!

Wellness Tip

Try Tea Tree Oil – For athlete’s foot, reach for tea tree oil, an extract of the leaves of an Australian tree. It appears to have antiseptic properties and may work as well as or better than over-the-counter antifungal products. Apply a light coating of the oil to affected areas two to three times a day; continue for a week or two after symptoms disappear.

Giving Back: Manitoba ALS

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease or Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is a fatal, rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease that affects approximately 3,000 Canadians and more than 289 Manitobans. Over the past twelve years, the Manitoba Walks for ALS have raised over $1.5 Million dollars to help support Research, Client Services and Education for Manitobans living with ALS/MND. Last year’s event in Winnipeg was a huge success with more than 1600 people participating, helping to raise over $210,000. This year’s goal is $250,000. Visit our website to register as an individual, team or just sponsor someone in the walk on June 20. Your donations allow the ALS Society of Manitoba to lend equipment and learning resources, and to offer services such as support groups, client services coordination, caregiver days, and more.

Alternative Healing: Aromatherapy

In 1994, building upon knowledge accumulated by Dr. Edward Bach, Doctors Reimar Banis, M.D., N.D. and Ulrike Banis, M.D., N.D.. (having decades of experience in both general medicine and holistic health), began to develop a new holistic method of treating illnesses, independent from any ideologies or belief system, considering the body and soul as well as the vital energies. With the assistance of biophysicist Dieter Jossner, The REBA Test device was invented and became available to trained practitioners in 1998. The REBA Test device accurately measures the subtle energy field of the body (also known as the aura), by detecting Delta (vital), Theta (emotional), Alpha (mental) and Beta (causal) brain waves. Regarding Aromatherapy, this device can be used to select the optimum essential oil or synergy of oils for an individual, based on improvement to their baseline reading.

Spotlight: Spirit Gardens

Gord Weber is truly in the garden business to make a difference and to bring people closer to Nature. His passion is creating landscaping while working cooperatively with Nature Spirits. Being employed in a stressful career for several years, he began to garden in his neighbour’s yards. What he quickly learned was his connection with Nature – shrubs that he touched became greener, healthier and more robust. A change in careers was born. Gord is now in the process of learning to communicate with Nature Spirits. What works, what doesn’t, what their needs are. “We are all connected. We need to know and respect that.” The tranquility of water, the darting of birds, the playfulness of elementals and the healing qualities of plants all play a role in the enlightenment of humans. Gord designs, installs and maintains residential properties. He has that ‘artistic gift’ for designing ponds, waterfalls, creeks, patios, walkways, retaining walls, with use of applications such as stones, boulders, organic soil, cedar structures and healing plants.
