Nutrition for Your Stem Cells

Among the many breakthroughs in natural health, nutrition to support and increase our bodies own stem cells is monumental. Our stem cell levels decrease each year as we age, decline starts at around age 30, reducing our ability to heal and repair. Young people have a large number of stem cells so they recover from injuries more rapidly. Now there is a dietary supplement formulated with natural nutrients by a Stem Cell Scientist. It provides nourishment to the bone marrow, enabling it to produce more stem cells, increasing their numbers by up to 100% over a significant period of time, as shown in two human clinical studies published in peer-reviewed medical journals. It has been used successfully since 2007 by people wanting to achieve and maintain a higher level of stem cells for health or repair.

The 4-7-8 Breath*

If you find yourself stressed out or anxious, try this quick exercise to help bring you peace and relaxation. The technique is simple.   Inhale for a 4 count, hold your breath for a 7 count, and exhale for an 8 count. Repeat this for a total of 4 breaths. Ideally, sit comfortably with your back straight. Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth, just behind your top front teeth. Inhale through your nose and exhale thru your mouth with pursed lips, making a whooshing noise. The length of each step is not important, however the ratio of 4-7-8 is important. This technique is effective because it acts as a natural neutralizer for the nervous system, gaining more effectiveness the more it is practiced. This breath works great for children as well as adults.

Plant Health: Aloe Vera

With so many products out there on the market today, it’s important to know that you are getting what you pay for. You want to look for Aloe Vera which is organically grown, cold processed and hand filleted and the activity level of the gel is certified to be in the highest percentile required to provide your body with all the nutrients it needs to heal itself. When the Aloe Vera is hand filleted, it removes the aloin, which kills cellular reproduction, this cannot be accomplished when using the whole leaf and processing it through rollers. For thousands of years people have been using inner leaf Aloe Vera externally for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Aloe Vera contains high concentrations of saccharides and taken from the fresh Aloe Vera plant, saccharides are a potent building block in the body’s immune system defence. What could Aloe Vera do for you?

Pet Health: Prolotherapy

Injury to tendons and ligaments are a common cause of lameness in dogs. Damage to ligaments and tendons are also very painful as they contain the highest receptors for pain next to the outer lining of the bone called the periosteum. The damage can also cause loose joints and their body tries to compensate by forming calcifications in these areas leading to arthritis/osteo-arthritis. When ligaments are completely ruptured, surgery may be the best option. However for a partial tear of the ligament as in the cranial cruciate ligament, an option may be Prolotherapy. This procedure involves injection of sterile solutions into tendons or ligaments or joints which has the following effects: It increases collagen formation, it triggers the release of growth factors, it causes local stem cells to proliferate and differentiate into the cells necessary for healing.

Shoulder Pain?

What do you do when your anti-inflammatories don’t take care of your shoulder pain?  Often, a diagnosis such as “tendonitis” is the source of your symptoms however it is rarely the cause.  So if your shoulder pain returns when going off the meds, possibly looking at muscle imbalances around your shoulder blade or your overall mid-back mobility might be the key to getting your rotator cuff tendons to be less inflamed.

With my patients, I often use the analogy of brand new tires on your vehicle.  If you don’t get the wheel alignment checked, you will always wear out the front left tire.  Our Physiotherapist, Athletic Therapist and Sport Medicine Doctor can help address your alignment so you don’t wear out your front left wheel!

Shingles Vaccine: Should you get it?

Shingles is a viral infection that is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you’ve had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue and can reactivate as shingles years later. Shingles can occur anywhere on your body but it most often appears as a very painful, blistering rash along your torso. It’s estimated that nearly 1 in 3 people will experience shingles in their lifetime, with an increased risk if you’re over 50 years old.

The shingles vaccine, Zostavax II, is approved for adults age 50 or older and it’s recommended if you’re 60 or above, even if you’ve had shingles before. This is because shingles can occur more than once! The vaccine decreases the risk of shingles by about half. While it cannot completely prevent everyone that receives it from getting shingles, it can help reduce the intensity and duration of shingles related pain in these people.

Talk to your pharmacist or physician to see if the shingles vaccine is right for you!

Holistic Health Coaching

The role of a health coach is to help you achieve an improved state of health. By educating you to better understand and enhance your body’s own innate healing capacity and changing your approach to food, we will create healthy patterns and choices to enhance your overall well-being. I have a holistic approach to health coaching which includes the use of Reiki energy medicine.

During an initial health consultation we will discuss your unique situation in depth and determine how we can reach your personal goals together. Everything we work on including food and lifestyle choices will be in partnership with any medical intervention chosen by you and your doctor and will serve as a support to that treatment path. I neither diagnose nor directly treat disease. I respect your physiological and emotional individuality and all recommendations will take into account your particular situation.

Paralysis by Analysis

Lots of people think about getting back in shape. They go on the computer and research training plans, nutrition, cardio regimens, gyms, sports and more. There is so much information out there and often people want to figure out what the best thing to do is. The problem is we spend so much time researching and not enough time doing. In the time spent sitting at the computer we could have gotten up gone for a run or walk, done some pushups, sit ups and so on… The same thing happens with our money! We research paying down debt, investing, stocks, bonds, and mutual funds until our head is spinning and in the end we accomplish nothing. The solution for both is to take action and make a change!

Spring Cleaning

Kitchens and bathrooms are breeding grounds for germs, so keeping them clean just makes good sense. But did you know about the link between tidy living spaces and mental wellness? After these long, dark winter months spring cleaning can revive not only your home but also your mind and spirit. Mess equals stress and it keeps you from things you love and contributes to feeling overwhelmed. We all want a clean home, but not everyone knows how to achieve this.

Here are 3 steps to creating a routine that works for you:

  1. Create a task list room by room.
  2. Decide how often each task should be performed (daily, weekly, monthly).
  3. Set aside 45 minutes each day to check items off your list (15 minutes before work, after work and before bedtime works just as well)
