Caring for the Caregiver

Caregiving is an exhausting and often round-the-clock role that many of us will take on in our lifetime. How do we thrive while providing holistic supportive care to our loved ones? The answer is by caring for ourselves! The best way for both you and your loved ones to flourish is by accepting help and creating a community of support. If a friend or family member offers to give you respite, leave your guilt at the door and enjoy this time away! If you would like to have support from the experts, call Comfort Keepers today.

Should I Buy Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations and interruptions is highly recommended; especially for seniors. A medical emergency in a foreign country is not covered by your provincial health insurance; a hospital stay can easily cost $100,000 or more. If you do get sick and can’t travel home from your destination, trip interruption insurance will cover your costs while you recover. If you become ill before you travel, trip cancellation insurance will reimburse travel costs. Travel insurance buys peace of mind. If you travel several times a year, you may want to consider annual travel insurance.

Alzheimer’s & Home Safety

If you are part of a family that includes a loved one living with Alzheimer’s disease, it’s important to remember that one of the keys to aging at home is doing so safely. Safety at home begins with adapting the environment to support the changing abilities of the person with Alzheimer’s. Tips to help safeguard the home include: Install safety latches/locks on the doors and fenced/gated exteriors; Limit access to knives and harmful chemicals; Install grab bars for safe movement; Keep furniture in the same spot to avoid confusion; Install alarms on the doors, and store car keys in a locked container.

What Does Health Mean to You?

What is your definition of health? It can be different depending on your goals, ability, current health status and other aspects of your life. Health incorporates mental, physical, and social health, just to name a few areas that impact our overall health and what we consider health to be, look like and feel like. Before you make your next health goal, define what health means to you. Research, reflection, and coaching can all help set goals, formulate plans, and the all-important maintenance phase of all changes that come with goal setting. I can help.

Socks with Comfortable Compression

Are you moving enough during the day? If you spend a lot of time sitting, your calf muscles which usually help pump blood through your veins do very little. This can cause swelling and blood to pool in the lower legs. Standing all day can have the same effect. Walking is a great exercise to help the calf muscles do their job. Socks with compression squeeze your legs to move blood up your leg whether you are sitting or standing. Voxx Knee Highs offer gentle compression, are comfortable to wear and have HPT to help with pain, balance and stability.

A Friend Wants to Buy your Home?

While it’s nice to sell your house to someone you know and have an easy transition, be mindful of the value of your home. Recently, we encountered a “nice” neighbour who offered to buy a senior’s home for $600,000 cash. The market value of the home was closer to $1,200,000. Without intervention from loved ones and a trusted real estate professional, the owner’s financial future could have been critically compromised. Be sure to ask for sound advice before making big decisions! Questions on Real Estate? Call Tony.
