How Counselling Supports Children’s Wellbeing

After a child experiences stress or hardship, parents often wonder, “Do they really need counselling if they seem fine?” It’s an important question and the truth is, that while counselling can be helpful for anyone, for children who’ve faced challenges, it can be especially valuable. Even when kids appear to be coping well, the effects of those experiences can surface later.
These difficult experiences are sometimes called Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). They include things like family conflict, separation, loss, neglect, witnessing violence, or living with someone who struggles with addiction or mental illness. Research shows that ACEs can affect how a child’s brain and body develop, increasing their risk for emotional, behavioral, and even physical health challenges later in life. The good news is that with the right support, children can heal and counselling plays a big part in that process. Counselling helps children build coping skills, process difficult emotions, and feel safe. At the same time, a strong, supportive relationship with a parent or caregiver is just as important. Sometimes that means parents seeking support or counselling for themselves, so they can show up at their best for their child. Together, these supports create the foundation for a child’s wellbeing.
Even when past experiences are not talked about openly, their effects can show up as:
• Trouble focusing or learning
• Acting out or withdrawing
• Anxiety, sadness, or anger
• Low confidence or self-esteem
• Difficulty sleeping or physical complaints
Counselling provides a safe and supportive space for children to share what they’re feeling.. through words, play, or creative activities at their own pace. A trained counsellor helps children make sense of their experiences, understand their emotions, and learn healthy ways to cope. This process helps them begin to rebuild trust, confidence, and a sense of safety.
Over time, children who participate in counselling often:
• Feel calmer and more in control
• Communicate better with family and friends
• Improve their mood and school performance
• Develop stronger problem-solving and coping skills
• Build resilience to handle life’s challenges
Counselling also supports caregivers and families. Parents are often included in parts of the process, learning practical ways to respond to their child’s emotions, set healthy boundaries, and create a more supportive home environment.
Counselling isn’t just for children in crisis – it’s an opportunity to strengthen emotional health and prevent problems from becoming bigger down the road. By helping children understand and manage their feelings, counselling can improve relationships, boost confidence, and support lifelong well-being.

Interval Training for Heart Health

One of the most effective ways to support heart health is interval training. This approach allows you to achieve the same amount of exercise work in less time, making workouts easier to fit into a busy day or freeing up time to include strength training. In many cases, a 30-minute interval workout can deliver cardiovascular benefits similar to a 60-minute moderate session. As your fitness improves, you may notice better endurance, increased energy, and more get up and go. This happens because your heart and lungs are working together at peak efficiency. The Heart–Movement Connection

Heart Health Month is a reminder that cardiovascular health is closely linked to how we move – or don’t move – each day. Prolonged sitting, poor posture, and unresolved pain can limit activity levels, placing added strain on the heart over time. Physiotherapy plays an important role in addressing these barriers by improving mobility, strength, balance, and confidence in movement. This February, understanding the connection between pain-free movement and heart health can empower individuals to make changes that benefit not only their joints and muscles, but their cardiovascular system as well.

Reflexology for a Healthy Heart

Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that involves applying targeted pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears, which correspond to different systems within the body. In relation to heart health, reflexology helps support healthy circulation, encourage deep relaxation, and reduce stress which are key factors in maintaining cardiovascular wellbeing. Prolonged stress is known to contribute to high blood pressure and increased strain on the heart. By calming the nervous system, reflexology promotes relaxation and may support healthier heart rhythms. Regular sessions may help ease tension, improve sleep quality, and support the body’s natural ability to restore balance and overall well being.

A Heart-Healthy Approach

A Heart-Healthy Approach
Editorial
Feeling fine doesn’t necessarily equate to optimal health. Many underlying issues, like heart disease, or can develop silently over years. Shockingly, 60% of cardiovascular cases reveal symptoms only during a heart attack, stroke, or worse. Despite feeling well, potential spinal or nervous system issues may exist. The nervous system governs bodily functions, emphasizing its crucial role in overall health. A chiropractic assessment, even when feeling fine, can detect subluxations or disruptions in brain-body connectivity. Proactive treatment ensures proper functionality and prevention, addressing potential concerns that may not be apparent in day-to-day feelings of wellness.

Heart Health Starts at Home

Small, daily habits can make a big difference for your heart. For seniors and individuals managing chronic conditions, heart health is closely tied to routine, support, and consistency. Home care services can help by encouraging regular movement, preparing heart-healthy meals, supporting medication adherence, and reducing stress through companionship and daily assistance. Even gentle activities like short walks, light stretching, and balanced nutrition can improve circulation and lower cardiovascular risk. With the right support at home, individuals can maintain independence while creating a safer, healthier environment that supports long-term heart health and overall well-being.
