Did You Know?

In 2003, two friends in Melbourne, Australia, came up with the idea of bringing moustaches back into fashion. They recruited 30 men to grow one. What began as a joke became a global men’s health movement.

The Power of Gratitude

November is a wonderful time to pause, reflect, and appreciate the things that bring meaning and joy to our lives. Practicing gratitude can have a positive impact on mental and emotional well-being, particularly as we grow older. Taking time each day to recognize life’s simple pleasures…from a warm cup of tea and a beautiful autumn day to a friendly conversation with a neighbour, can help reduce stress and encourage a more positive outlook. Gratitude can also support healthy aging by promoting better sleep, stronger social connections, and overall well-being. This November, let’s celebrate the many things we have to be thankful for and share that gratitude with others.

Men & Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that affects many men, causing breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep. Symptoms may include loud snoring, gasping for air, morning headaches, daytime fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. Men, particularly those who are overweight or have a larger neck circumference, may face an increased risk. Untreated sleep apnea can contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease, and other health complications. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and limiting alcohol before bedtime may help. If you experience persistent symptoms, consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and treatment.

Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Month

Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) that affect millions of people worldwide. November is Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Month, a time to highlight the daily struggles of those living with IBD and promote understanding and support. Symptoms like abdominal pain, fatigue, and urgent bowel movements can deeply impact quality of life. There is no cure, but treatments can help manage flare-ups and maintain remission. Raising awareness encourages early diagnosis, better care, and ongoing research. During this month, share stories, wear purple, and support organizations working toward improved treatments and, one day, a cure.

‘Movember’ – Let’s Talk Hearing

Men are nearly twice as likely as women to experience hearing loss, yet they’re often less likely to seek testing. Traditional ideas about toughness, fear of hearing aids, and gradual changes in hearing can lead men to delay care. Unfortunately, untreated hearing loss can affect communication, relationships, social connection, and overall well-being. The good news? Hearing care is easier than ever. Modern hearing aids are discreet, connected, rechargeable, and designed for everyday life. If you’ve noticed difficulty following conversations, hearing in noisy environments, or frequently asking others to repeat themselves, consider a hearing screening. And at Beltone, we’re ready when you are.

The Golden Circle provides supportive transportation to adults aged 50+ in Red Deer, Red Deer County, and surrounding rural areas who have no other means of transportation. Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to assist clients with medical appointments, escorted grocery shopping, and attendance at Golden Circle programs to help reduce social isolation.
Supportive transportation is available Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To register, individuals must first be assessed by an Outreach Coordinator.
