Better At Home Services

Better at Home supports seniors by meeting their non-medical needs. By providing assistance with these simple, day-to-day tasks, Better at Home assures seniors continue to live independently in their own homes and remain connected to their communities. Better at Home services are offered province wide with the help of Healthy Aging by United Way. Services vary from community to community but may include the following: Friendly Visiting. Transportation. Light Yard Work. Minor Home Repairs. Light Housekeeping. Grocery Shopping. Due to Covid, some services are temporarily being offered virtually. To find out more about the services, please contact Simren at 604-536-9348.

Good Fit for Home-Care Services?

Because home care covers such a broad variety of services, there is not just one condition that makes someone a good fit for in-home care. Home care aides can be hired to assist a client with any of their needs, whether that be getting transportation to appointments, or grocery shopping and cooking meals. You may be a good candidate for in-home care if you’re in need of any of the following: Assistance with daily tasks, housekeeping, mobility assistance, medication management, short-term care (if you’re recovering from an illness or surgery and need extra assistance), or even companionship if you’re living alone and struggling with feeling isolated.

Aging At Home

Many seniors would prefer to stay at home than move into a senior care home, but there are some challenges to consider. Factors like finances, physical mobility, social network, health concerns, and safety in the home are all things to think about. If you decide to remain in your home, discuss your plans with your family or a trusted advisor. It’s important to prepare your home to ensure you can live comfortably and safely there, using various aids and tools to make things easier. In-home care can also provide much-needed day-to-day support, as well as transportation to appointments and gatherings.

Gardening for Active Aging

Gardening is an activity that people of all ages can enjoy and offers many benefits to those interested in staying active as they age. The movements involved in gardening can amount to a moderate-intensity workout that helps aging bodies stay more flexible and maintain a healthy weight. Gardening also boosts mood and encourages better mental health. The sights, sounds, smells, and textures can invoke a sense of calm and contentment, as well as a sense of purpose. It’s possible to adapt gardening activities to mobility and skill levels by using easily accessible containers, ergonomic tools, and simple gardening techniques.
