Hearing Aids & Summer

As temperatures rise, it’s important to understand how to take care of your hearing aids. Beware of Heat! Avoid putting your hearing aids in places that attract heat quickly – like the glove compartment or console in your car. Stay Away from Moisture! Remember to take your hearing aids out before swimming or if you’re caught in the rain. Keep ‘em Clean! Warm, humid weather creates a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. You can use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away dirt and debris from your hearing aids. Follow these simple tips and get outside to enjoy the warm weather.

June is Men’s Health Month

Men’s Health Awareness Month, observed each June, shines a spotlight on the unique health challenges men face. It aims to encourage early detection and treatment of diseases like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and heart disease. The month promotes regular check-ups, healthier lifestyles, and open conversations about mental health—an often-overlooked issue among men. Awareness campaigns seek to break stigmas and inspire men to prioritize their well-being. Through community events, educational outreach, and support networks, Men’s Health Awareness Month empowers individuals to take control of their health and fosters a culture where seeking help is seen as a strength, not a weakness.

Be Safe in the Sun

Skin cancer is one of the most common and preventable forms of cancer. Apply SPF of at least 30 to 50—every two to four hours you are outdoors or riding in a car. Routinely wearing a quality pair of sunglasses protects the eyes from cataracts, a condition common among older adults. Look for a pair with a label showing they block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. As we grow older, the body doesn’t adjust to changes in temperature and humidity as quickly as in younger days. This puts seniors at higher risk for dehydration and sun-related illnesses, like heat stroke – so make sure to keep hydrated!

Book Club:

The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men’s Health – distills 25 years of research on men’s health into a comprehensive resource. It covers diet, exercise, supplements, and diseases like prostate cancer. The guide also offers advice on alcohol consumption, stress control, and navigating the healthcare system, making it an essential reference for men’s health. Ask at your local bookstore.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Did you know that spending time outdoors and connecting with others can have a powerful impact on your mental well-being? One of the most effective ways to support your mental health, at any age, is by strengthening your social connections. For older adults, certain life events like retirement, illness, the passing of a spouse, or adult children moving away can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. These feelings can take a real toll on mental health. But there’s good news: social connectedness boosts well-being. And when connection grows, mental health often improves, too.
So why not stop by the Golden Circle? It’s a welcoming space to meet new people, make friends, and be part of a supportive, vibrant community of older adults. Let’s take care of our mental health—together.
