Foot Health Awareness Month

April is National Foot Health Awareness Month. Feet are both a critical component and gauge of our well-being, and yet, they rarely cross people’s minds — unless they are in pain. The average person takes approximately 10,000 steps per day, and with 26 bones plus 33 joints, our feet serve as the foundation for the rest of our body. If the feet are not mechanically sound, it can affect the knees, hips and even the lower back. You’ll need your feet to carry you an average of 115,000 miles in your lifetime; therefore, avoiding foot problems should be a priority!

Stay Limber and Pain Free

85% of our population will have an episode of disabling back pain at some point! Sedentary and sitting lifestyles are significant factors that reflect our busy lifestyles, commuting to work, driving kids around, sitting at a desk, etc. We’re meant to move; prolonged positions of any kind can be aggravating. Simple tips are to stretch in the morning before getting out of bed, use pillows between your knees while you sleep, get up and move at least once per hour. Both passive and active treatments are very important for back health such as physiotherapy, massage therapy, and exercise.

Helping the Voiceless with JSJ

For the last 12 years, Robin McKay has volunteered with the Central Alberta Humane Society and other animal sanctuaries, helping animals under extreme stress return to a balanced state through the practice of Jin Shin Jyutsu (JSJ) on our animal companions. Whether they have been returned, left wondering what they had done wrong, or recovering from surgery or a traumatic event, Robin uses this healing touch to reduce their pain, decrease anxiety and let go of negative stressors for these precious animals to live their best health and be embraced in new homes filled with love.

Are You Carrying Stress?

(ITALICS FOR ALL QUESTIONS) Have you ever been in an automobile accident? Through a divorce or a breakup? Bullied? Abandoned? Suffered from physical, emotional, or sexual abuse? Traumatized? Have you had a physical injury or illness? Suffered loss? Felt afraid of something? Shocked and disappointed in something or someone? Or are you a constant worrier? (NORMAL) If thinking about these events and/or experiences still bring up an emotional or physical response, you may still be carrying the related stress within you. Emotional Wellness and Tapping can gently and easily help to eliminate those physical and emotional responses to help you regain your calm, clarity, and confidence.

Any “Diet” Can Work

The question is: Can you stick to it for more than a few weeks? If you’re honest with yourself the answer is no. If people could stick to diets, we wouldn’t have a new fad popping up every week. Sometimes people will say “I’m lazy” or “I’m not motivated.” The only solution to “lazy” is to “try harder” — and we know that willpower alone will never be enough. Willpower is essentially saying “I will fight myself and win.” What can you do? You create a way of living that doesn’t rely on willpower.

Reduce Your Risk for Dementia

Hearing loss has long been considered a normal and an acceptable part of aging. It is common as estimates suggest that it affects 2 out of 3 adults, age 70 and older. Unfortunately, hearing loss is seldom treated. In the U.S., for example, only 14 percent of adults who have hearing loss wear hearing aids. An important emerging body of research, however, suggests that diminished hearing may be a significant risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia — and that the association between hearing loss and cognitive decline potentially begins at very low levels of impairment.

At Risk of Pneumonia?

Did you know there are ways you can prevent it? Or maybe you’ve been putting off getting the vaccine? Most people know about the publicly funded vaccine for people over the age of 65, however, there are two different vaccines to help prevent pneumonia. One or both may be publicly funded for you, regardless of your age! Many factors go into assessing eligibility for the vaccines, so it is worth asking if you qualify. Your Central Alberta Co-op Pharmacists are ready to answer ALL your questions related to pneumonia and they do the injections when appropriate.
