Healthy Gums, Better Diabetes Control

Keeping your gums healthy is an important part of managing diabetes. Gum disease (periodontitis) can raise blood sugar levels and make diabetes harder to control. In turn, high blood sugar can increase the risk of infections in the mouth, creating a harmful cycle. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly can help prevent gum problems. Watch for signs like bleeding gums, bad breath, or loose teeth. Good oral hygiene supports overall health and may even improve blood sugar stability. Taking care of your gums is a simple, effective way to support your diabetes management.

Teeth Grinding in Children

Some children grind their teeth during sleep—a condition called bruxism—which can lead to headaches, jaw pain, and worn-down teeth. A custom-fit mouthguard, worn at night, can help protect your child’s teeth and reduce discomfort. These guards act as a cushion, preventing damage from clenching and grinding. Dentists can assess whether a mouthguard is needed and ensure it fits properly for comfort and effectiveness. Addressing teeth grinding early can prevent long-term dental issues and improve sleep quality. If your child complains of jaw pain or shows signs of tooth wear, talk to your dentist about a nighttime mouthguard.

Ask The Expert

q: I’m so glad for the summer daylight now! I’m looking forward to it – is there any harm in going without sunglasses? I think it’s much more healthy to absorb sunlight without them.

a: No, it’s better for your eyes to protect them from the sun. Prolonged exposure to UV light increases the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, skin tumours on the eyelids, and changes in the conjunctiva. The miniscule amount of Vitamin D produced by the eyes through sun exposure does not justify the long-term risk.

Why Pet’s Oral Health Matters

Why Pet’s Oral Health Matters
Good oral health is essential to your pet’s overall well-being. Without proper care, pets can develop plaque and tartar buildup, leading to gum disease, tooth loss, and painful infections. These bacteria can also enter the bloodstream and affect vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys, potentially causing serious illness. Regular brushing, dental check-ups, and cleanings help prevent these issues and keep your pet healthy and comfortable. Bad breath, drooling, or difficulty eating may be early signs of dental problems. Prioritizing your pet’s oral care is a simple yet powerful way to support their long-term health and happiness. Exercise for a Healthy Mind

Regular exercise boosts brain function in seniors by improving blood flow, reducing inflammation, and stimulating the release of chemicals that support brain cell health. Walking, swimming, or yoga enhance memory, focus, and problem-solving skills while lowering the risk of cognitive decline. Exercise also supports better sleep and mood, reducing anxiety and depression, which are linked to poor brain health. Studies show that consistent physical activity can even slow the progression of dementia and delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. For seniors, staying active is not just about physical fitness—it’s a powerful tool for maintaining a sharp and healthy mind.

Simple UV Safety Tips for Seniors

Sunshine naturally provides our skin with Vitamin D, which has many health benefits! Sunshine can also be harmful, so we need to protect our skin. Keep these tips in mind year-round, especially in these sunny summer months! * See the dermatologist annually. It is a great idea to also self-check during a shower. Apply sunscreen liberally and often. It is recommended that you reapply a minimum of SPF 30 every two hours. Use “broad spectrum,” which protects from both UVA and UVB rays. Cover yourself; clothing is a great option for sun protection. Vivid colours offer more protection than pale ones. Stay safe out there!

See Your Pharmacist for Minor Ailments

Your pharmacist is trained and authorized to assess and prescribe medications for minor ailments and contraception. Minor ailments are health conditions that can be managed with minimal treatment. If you are experiencing a skin rash, fungal infection, heartburn, seasonal allergies, shingles, urinary tract infections (UTIs), or a vaginal yeast infection, you can visit your pharmacist for a free assessment. After the assessment, your pharmacist may prescribe medication or refer you to another healthcare provider. The next time you have a minor health issue, consider booking an appointment with your pharmacist for a free assessment.
