Diary of Ann Frank

NTG presents the powerful and gritty new adaptation of the Diary of Anne Frank. An impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic. It captures the truly claustrophobic realities of their daily existence, their fear, their hope, their laughter and their grief. This is a new adaption for a new generation. Lest we forget. On stage April 24 – May 11.

Walking to Improve your Health

Want to know how to live longer? According to researchers, walking briskly for just 30 minutes a day may give you an extra seven years! Furthermore, regular exercise is an anti-depressant, improves cognitive function and may delay the onset of dementia. Nanaimo Parks and Recreation offers a variety of walking and hiking programs, including “Walk with the Docs” held at Maffeo Sutton Park. For more advanced walkers, we offer Trailblazers and even guided hikes to Ammonite Falls or Mt. Benson. We also maintain over 170 kilometres of trails.

What is an Audiogram?

When you have a hearing test, the results are represented in the form of an audiogram. Your hearing care professional uses the audiogram to identify if there is hearing loss, and if so, the extent of it. The audiogram illustrates your hearing by representing your hearing threshold levels at different frequencies. The hearing threshold levels show the point at which a tone can be perceived. A hearing threshold level of between 0 and 25 dB is considered normal.  Book a hearing test and consultation and take your first steps towards better hearing.

Effective Communications

Being able to communicate effectively with your elderly loved ones is essential. Often, it is not what you say, but how you say it that determines how your message is received. • Show your respect by treating them as equals. • Listen attentively and ask questions if you are not sure.  Make sure that your message is understood. • Think before responding and do not speak when you are angry or upset.  If you have to have a potentially difficult conversation, rehearse what you want to say. • Set your boundaries.  It is ok to refuse a request without rejecting your loved one.

Does Culture Shape Gambling?

Throughout history, gambling has been a part of most cultures around the world. From the earliest playing with bone dice to the most sophisticated video lottery terminals, humans seem fascinated with gambling. Different cultures prefer different forms. Casinos are popular among Asian and Eastern European gamblers; Southern European and Arabic gamblers prefer card games; scratch lottery tickets are popular in North American and European countries. Mahjong, Baccarat and Poker are China’s games of preference. Regardless of your preference, help is available when gambling is no longer just for entertainment.

The Foreigner

A painfully shy Englishman takes a room at Betty Meeks’ Fishing Lodge. In order to avoid his pathological fear of social interactions, Charlie pretends that he can’t speak English. This new role as “foreigner” makes Charlie the unwitting confidante when he overhears more than he is meant to – with hilarious results! He  finds himself in predicaments that are sidesplittingly funny, but which also give us food for thought, as they remind us that our all-too-human foibles, follies, and frailties can make us endearing as well as initiate inspiring personal transformations. The Foreigner will be on our stage April 18 – May 9.

Take Your Chances!

In chance-based games, the outcome is not impacted by a player’s skill or knowledge. Slot machines, scratch tickets and lotteries are all examples of chance-based games. All you can control is how much you bet, how often you play, and for how long. In skill-based games, learning more about the game or developing skills can influence your chances of winning, however, chance still plays a big part in skill-based games. Skill and/or knowledge may variably influence the outcome of any game, but no one controls cards or dice. Examples of skill-based games include mahjong, backgammon, poker, black-jack, sports and horse betting.

Hot or Cold?

Heat and cold therapy can be an effective and inexpensive way to relieve pain from a variety of conditions such as arthritis, pulled muscles, inflammation and swelling. Cold therapy is best for bruised or swollen joints and tendons; it improves nerve activity and blood flow. Use ice packs and a bag of ice cubes with a little cool water for acute injuries/pain, inflammation and swelling. Heat therapy improves blood flow, circulation and soothes muscles and joints and increases their flexibility. Use heat packs and pads for muscle pain, tension and stiffness. Take care, your body will thank you!
